A practical English guide to Kameoka in Kyoto: the river gorge, the old temple and access from Kyoto and Osaka.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).
Why visit
- Kameoka is a city in the hills west of Kyoto, where the Katsura river comes down from the mountains and runs through a gorge towards the city. It is farming country and commuter country, with old temples, river paths and a landscape of fields and forest.
- The city is known for its river gorge, which can be seen from the train and from boats in summer, and for its temples, including the old Shakuzenji, which sit in the hills above the centre. The streets are quieter than Kyoto’s, and the food and prices are those of a country town.
- Kameoka is on the JR Sanin line and the Sagano scenic railway, which makes it an easy trip from Kyoto, and it is a good base for the western hills and the river.
