Why visit

  • Obama is a castle town on Wakasa bay, in western Fukui, and it was the capital of the Obama domain in the Edo period. The castle, the old streets and the temples of the town are still there, and the bay beyond is one of the quieter coasts of the Hokuriku region.
  • The town is known for its castle, which was rebuilt on the old stone walls, and for its food, including the mackerel that is carried along the old road from the coast to Kyoto. The streets around the castle have merchant houses and temples, and the harbour has small boats and a view across the bay.
  • Obama is on the JR Obama line, close to Tsuruga and within reach of Kyoto, which makes it an easy stop on the coastal route, and it is a good place to see the Wakasa region without crowds.
