A practical English guide to Iida in southern Nagano: the castle park, the old merchant streets, the Tenryu river and the Iida line.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Iida sits in a long, narrow basin in southern Nagano, where the Tenryu river runs between steep ridges on its way south. The town grew as a castle town and a market for the surrounding valleys, and it still has the shape of one: a grid of streets, a castle park on the hill, and old merchant houses along the river.
- It is also the northern terminus of the Iida line, one of the most scenic rural railways in Japan, which winds south through the mountains towards Toyohashi. For rail travellers the journey itself is a reason to come.
- Iida is a working town rather than a tourist destination, with hot summers and cold, clear winters, apples and persimmons from the surrounding farms, and a compact centre that is easy to walk.
