Why visit

  • Yuki is a small city in western Ibaraki, on the plain between the Tone river and the hills of Tochigi. It was a castle town and a temple town, and it is known for one of the great temples of the region, Shomyo-ji, which has a long history and a quiet precinct.
  • The city is compact and walkable, with a station, a main street of shops and a few old buildings, and the countryside beyond is farming country, with fields and small woods. The temple is the main reason to come, and it is at its best in spring and autumn.
  • Yuki is on the JR Mito line, close to Oyama and within reach of Tokyo, which makes it an easy half-day trip, and it is much quieter than the better-known temple towns of the Kanto region.
