A practical English guide to Oyama in Tochigi: the junction town, the local food and access from Tokyo.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Oyama is a city in southern Tochigi, a major railway junction where the Tohoku shinkansen meets lines towards Mito, Utsunomiya and the Nikko corridor. It is a practical city of stations, shops and offices rather than a sightseeing destination.
  • The reason to stop is convenience and food: Oyama is known for its gyoza and for being an easy change point on the way north. The centre around the station is walkable, with restaurants and department stores.
  • Oyama works as a short stop from Tokyo, or as a base for day trips into Tochigi without staying in Utsunomiya.
