A practical English guide to Nanao in Ishikawa: the port, the Noto gateway and access from Kanazawa.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Nanao is a port city at the base of the Noto peninsula in Ishikawa, and it has long been the gateway between Kanazawa and the peninsula. The harbour, the station and the surrounding bays make it a practical base for Noto rather than a resort town.
  • The city has hot springs, coastal parks and ferry links, and it is a place of seafood and quiet streets. After recent earthquakes some facilities and transport have changed, so checking current access is important.
  • Nanao is the natural first stop when heading into Noto from Kanazawa, with trains and roads continuing up the peninsula.
