A practical English guide to Nasushiobara in Tochigi: the hot springs, the station town and access from Tokyo.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Nasushiobara is a city at the northern edge of Tochigi, where the plain meets the Nasu mountains. It is a shinkansen stop and a gateway to the Nasu highland resorts, with hot springs, forests and a practical station town.
  • The city itself is spread between the railway, the farms and the foothills, and it has parks, museums and onsen that are quieter than the resort hotels higher up. It works as a base for Nasu without staying in the busiest villages.
  • Nasushiobara is about an hour from Tokyo by shinkansen, which makes it one of the easiest mountain and onsen trips from the capital.
