Planning drift ice in Abashiri? This English guide covers the season, the icebreaker, and why the ice is never guaranteed.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 22 October 2026).
Why visit
- Abashiri faces the Okhotsk Sea, and in winter the drift ice reaches this coast. The city’s tourism site treats the icebreaker cruise as the way to get out among it.
- The posted season for the large ship Aurora is 20 January to 31 March. The same page says ice is not guaranteed even inside that window. Weather, or fewer than 15 passengers, can cancel the day.
- This sailing leaves from the roadside station on the Abashiri waterfront. It is not the Shiretoko cruise from Utoro, even though the same company runs boats there too.
Top places and highlights

The icebreaker
The large ship is built to push through the ice. The tourism site describes heated rooms and a very cold outdoor deck, and says the trip is about an hour unless the ice sits farther out. A smaller boat, Aurora 3, does not break ice and runs as an extra service. Ask which boat you are booking.
Online booking for the season opens on 1 November. Check-in closes about 20 minutes before departure, and the small boat needs more than twice the time on the water. If the ice has not reached the coast, the large ship runs a sightseeing cruise instead and the small boat is cancelled outright, which is the difference worth knowing before paying for the longer trip.
The ice itself
If the ice has not come in, you may not see the white field you came for. The tourism site says the ice changes with the hour and the day. Birds and seals are a chance, not a promise. Outside the winter window there is no drift ice to chase.
The town in winter
Abashiri is a working port, not only a cruise. The city posts emergency notices. On 21 October 2026 it was reporting a wildfire at Misaki. That is a reminder to read the city site, not a permanent closure of the coast.
Food and drink
- Crab and other Okhotsk seafood are the winter meal in town. Restaurants follow normal hours and can be booked out on festival weekends.
- Eat before you board if you get cold easily. The ship is not a long dinner cruise.
Getting there and around
- Abashiri Station is the railhead. Memanbetsu Airport is the nearby airport. The ship boards at the roadside station Ryuhyo Kaido, a short ride from the station. Reconfirm the bus or taxi, especially at night.
- The terminal is inside the Ryuhyo Kaido roadside station on the waterfront, not at the station. Direct buses connect it with Abashiri Station, the bus terminal and Memanbetsu Airport, and the same route continues to the prison museum and the northern peoples museum, which makes a winter day easy to chain together. Evening departures thin out, so check the last bus before a late sailing.
- Book the cruise, then check the morning status. A paid ticket does not override a weather cancellation.
- Do not copy a timetable into your plan. Departures differ across January, February, and March, and the operator changes them. Use the tourism page and the operator site.
Where to stay
- Stay in Abashiri so a cancelled morning can become an afternoon sailing, if one is still running.
- A one-night dash from Sapporo is a long winter day. Give the ice its own night.
Best time to visit
- The cruise window posted for the season is late January through March. Early January can be too soon, and April is too late.
- February is the heart of the season and the busiest. The ice can still be offshore on the day you chose.
Practical tips
- Dress for the deck even if you intend to stay inside. The tourism site is blunt about the cold.
- If the status page says the sailing is off, believe it. The shore road is the backup, and it may also have no ice.
- The wild peninsula east of here is a different trip: the Shiretoko travel guide.
Suggested day-trip outline
- Night in Abashiri, and a morning check of the sailing.
- The cruise if it is running, from the roadside-station terminal.
- A walk on the winter shore, then seafood back in town.
