A practical English guide to Eniwa in Hokkaido: the forest valley, the onsen, the farm food and access from Sapporo and New Chitose Airport.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Eniwa is a city on the plain south of Sapporo, between the city and the mountains that ring the Shikotsu caldera. Most travellers pass through it on the train or the expressway, but it has a quiet valley of its own, with forest roads, a river, hot springs and farmland running up towards the peaks.
- The valley is the reason to stop. Beyond the housing estates, the road climbs into woods and past a reservoir, with walking routes and small onsen along the way. Mount Eniwa-dake stands above the far end, and the caldera rim leads on to Lake Shikotsu.
- Eniwa is also a farming town at heart, with rice fields and dairy farms around the edges, and it is close enough to New Chitose Airport to make a practical first or last stop in Hokkaido.
