A practical English guide to Sobetsu in Hokkaido: the onsen town under Mount Usu, the views of Showa-shinzan and Lake Toya, and how to get there from Sapporo and Hakodate.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Sobetsu sits on the northern shore of Lake Toya, at the foot of Mount Usu, a volcano that has erupted as recently as 2000 and reshaped the ground the town stands on. It is a small hot spring town rather than a resort strip: a few streets, a lakeside, and the mountain rising directly behind it.
  • The reason to come is the combination. You can soak in an onsen with the volcano in view, walk or drive up to the Usu crater area where the 1977 and 2000 eruptions left new ground, and look across the water to Showa-shinzan, the lava dome that pushed up out of a wheat field between 1943 and 1945. Scenery here is geology you can stand on.
  • Sobetsu is quieter than Toyako Onsen on the southern shore, with fewer large hotels and more of a working-town feel, which suits travellers who want the lake without the coach parties.

Practical tips

  • Confirm bus times and crater-area access before travelling, as they change with season and volcanic activity.
  • The ground around Usu is volcanic; stay on marked paths and follow any local closures.
  • Restaurants around the lake often close early, and some close on irregular days.

Suggested day-trip outline
