A practical English guide to Fukagawa in Hokkaido: the rice fields, the Ishikari river, the roadside market and access from Asahikawa and Sapporo.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Fukagawa sits in the middle of the Ishikari plain, where the river of the same name runs wide and slow across some of the flattest farmland in Hokkaido. It is rice country: the town calls itself Rice Land, and the fields stretch out in every direction from the low hills at its edge.
  • The town is small and practical, with a wide main street, a few old buildings from its days as a river port, and a roadside market that sells rice, vegetables and local products. The river itself is the landscape: bridges, sandbars and a line of water that fills the horizon.
  • Fukagawa is not a destination for sightseeing in the usual sense. It is a place to understand how the plain works, eat rice grown a few kilometres away, and see a side of Hokkaido that is agricultural rather than mountainous.

Practical tips

  • The town is spread out and the bus service is sparse; a car helps.
  • Many farms are private land; view from the roads rather than entering fields.
  • Winter driving requires snow tyres and caution on the flat, exposed roads.

Suggested day-trip outline

  1. Morning: train from Asahikawa to Fukagawa.
  2. Late morning: the river and the old bridge.
  3. Lunch: a local set meal or the roadside market.
  4. Afternoon: a drive through the rice fields.
  5. Late afternoon: back to town for the market.
  6. Evening: train on to Sapporo or back to Asahikawa.
