Why visit

  • Gobo is a city on the coast of western Wakayama, where the Hidaka river reaches the sea and the mountains come down to the water. It is a farming and fishing town, known for its plums and for the umeshu made from them, and it has been a market town for the surrounding valleys for centuries.
  • The centre has an old merchant house that is open to visitors, with the thick walls and storehouses of a trading family, and the river and the coast nearby give the town a landscape of water, orchards and hills. The plum season in early summer is the busiest time.
  • Gobo is on the JR Kisei main line, between Osaka and Tanabe, and it is a practical stop on the coastal route, close to the beaches and the mountains of the Kii peninsula.
