Why visit
- Tanabe is a city on the coast of Wakayama, at the mouth of the Tonda river, and it has been the gateway to the Kumano pilgrimage for centuries. Pilgrims arriving by boat or on foot passed through here before climbing into the mountains towards Hongu, and the town still has the shrine and the streets that grew around that traffic.
- The city has a small castle site, a temple district and a fishing port, and it is the last place with a station and shops before the mountains of the Kii peninsula. Buses run from here to Kumano Hongu Taisha and to the hot springs at Yunomine and Kawayu.
- Tanabe is also a working port, with fish and a seafront, and it makes a practical base for the western Kumano routes without the prices of the hot spring villages.
