A practical English guide to Itoigawa in Niigata: the jade coast, the Oyashirazu cliffs, the seafood and the access from Tokyo and Kanazawa.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Itoigawa is the northern end of the old Hokuriku road, where the mountains of Niigata fall straight into the Japan Sea. The town is famous for jade, which has been worked here for thousands of years, and for the Oyashirazu cliffs north of the centre, where the coast road was cut into the rock above the water.
- This is a landscape of steepness: narrow beaches of rounded stones, cliffs, tunnels and the sea close below the road. The geology is unusual enough that the area is recognised as part of a global geopark, and the town’s jade museum and craft workshops explain why.
- Itoigawa is also a working port, with seafood that reflects the coast: crab in winter, squid and fish through the year, and a station market that makes an easy lunch stop.
