A practical English guide to Masuda in Shimane: the Iwami kagura tradition, the castle ruins, the river and coast, and access from Hiroshima and Yamaguchi.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).
Why visit
- Masuda is a city in the far west of Shimane, close to the Yamaguchi border, where the Masuda river comes down to the Sea of Japan. It is the centre of Iwami kagura, a form of shrine theatre with masks, drums and dramatic movement that is performed across the region and, in Masuda, in dedicated halls as well as at festivals.
- Apart from the kagura, Masuda is a quiet river town with castle ruins on the hill above it, old streets along the water, and a coast to the north with small ports and beaches. It is the kind of place where the main attraction is an evening performance rather than a checklist of sights.
- Masuda also sits on the San’in main line, which makes it a natural stop between Hiroshima and the Shimane coast, and a base for the western end of the prefecture.
