A practical English guide to Numazu in Shizuoka: the fishing port, the seafood, the views of Mount Fuji and access from Tokyo and Nagoya.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 07 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Numazu sits at the head of Suruga Bay in eastern Shizuoka, where the mountains come down to a working harbour. It is a fishing city first: the port handles some of the largest landings in Japan, and the seafood is the reason many visitors stop here.
  • The other reason is the view. On clear days Mount Fuji stands across the bay, and the combination of harbour, water and the mountain is one of the best-known views in the region. The city is also the northern gateway to the Izu peninsula, with trains and roads running south along the coast.
  • Numazu itself is not a resort. It is a practical, busy city with a market, a castle park, shrines and a waterfront, and it rewards a few hours between trains rather than a long stay.

Practical tips

  • Seafood markets and restaurants often close in the afternoon; go early.
  • Fuji views depend on the weather; plan around a clear forecast rather than a fixed schedule.
  • The port area is spread out; check bus routes from the station.

Suggested day-trip outline

  1. Morning: train into Numazu and a walk to the port.
  2. Late morning: the fish market and the harbour.
  3. Lunch: a seafood bowl near the port.
  4. Afternoon: a shrine and park in the centre, then a Fuji viewpoint.
  5. Late afternoon: train south to Izu, or back towards Tokyo.
  6. Evening: dinner in town or at the coast.
