Why visit

  • Tendo is a small city in the Yamagata basin, and it makes almost all of the shogi pieces used in Japan. The pieces are carved from boxwood and written with brush and ink, and the workshops here have been doing it for generations. The city has a museum and a few workshops where the process can be seen.
  • It is also a hot spring town, with a long-established onsen district a short walk from the station, and a base for the fruit farms of the surrounding basin, which produce cherries, grapes, pears and la France.
  • Tendo is quiet and compact, with the shogi tradition, the baths and the fruit giving it a character that is specific to this part of Yamagata.
