Why visit
- Engaru is a town in eastern Hokkaido, on the Sekihoku line between Asahikawa and Abashiri, and it is a farming and railway town in the wide country inland from the Okhotsk coast. It is one of the larger towns of the interior, with a station, shops and public buildings along the main road.
- The town is known for a landmark rock that stands above it, a grey outcrop that can be seen from the surrounding fields, and for the landscape of farms, forests and rivers around it. The mountains of Daisetsuzan are to the west, and the coast is an hour away.
- Engaru is a practical stop on the northern line, and it is a good place to see the interior of eastern Hokkaido, with long views and quiet roads away from the coast.
