Why visit
- Oketo is a small town in the interior of eastern Hokkaido, north of Kitami, and it is surrounded by some of the quietest farmland on the island. The town is known for its marshland, a wetland area where birds stop and nest, and for the dairy farms that spread across the surrounding hills.
- The marsh is the reason to come if you are interested in wildlife. It is a low, reedy landscape with boardwalks and birdwatching points, and in spring and autumn it fills with migrating birds. The rest of the town is a handful of streets, a school, a shop and the flat fields beyond.
- Oketo is also a place to see how the interior of Hokkaido works: dairy, silage, tractors and long straight roads, with the mountains of Daisetsuzan far to the west.
