Why visit

  • Gujo is a city in the mountains of Gifu, formed from several old towns along the Yoshida river. Its best-known quarter is Gujo Hachiman, a castle town of clear water channels, stone paths and wooden houses, where the streets are washed by mountain water.
  • In summer the town is famous for the Gujo odori, a dance that lasts for nights on end and draws visitors from across Japan. Outside the festival, Gujo is a quiet place of temples, crafts and river walks, with food and lodging that feel more local than tourist.
  • Gujo is inland from Nagoya and Gifu, which makes it a half-day trip by train and bus, and it is one of the most distinctive small towns of the Chubu region.
