Why visit
- Ichinoseki is a city in southern Iwate, where the Kitakami river runs through a basin between the mountains of the interior and the coast. It is a market town and a railway junction, and it has been a crossing place on the roads north for centuries.
- The city has an old Hachiman shrine, a hillside park with a view over the centre, and a landscape of rice fields and orchards along the river. The surrounding area has hot springs, gorges and the old roads towards the coast and the interior.
- Ichinoseki is on the Tohoku shinkansen and the Tohoku main line, which makes it a practical stop between Sendai and Morioka, and a base for the southern part of Iwate.
