A practical English guide to Ishigaki in Okinawa: the beaches, the reefs and access from Naha and the Yaeyama islands.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).
Why visit
- Ishigaki is the main island and city of the Yaeyama group, far southwest of Okinawa’s main island. It has white beaches, coral reefs, a busy port and a small city centre of shops, markets and restaurants that serve travellers heading for Taketomi, Iriomote and the outer islands.
- Kabira Bay is the best-known view, with glass-bottom boats over the reef, and the island also has diving, hiking and cattle farms inland. The city itself is compact and walkable near the port, with an airport that connects to Naha and the mainland.
- Ishigaki is the hub of the Yaeyama islands, and most visitors use it as a base for day trips as well as beach time on the island itself.
