A practical English guide to Makurazaki in Kagoshima: the bonito port, the coast and access from Kagoshima city.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Makurazaki is a port city at the southern tip of the Satsuma peninsula in Kagoshima, and it is one of Japan’s main landing places for bonito. The harbour smells of fish and smoke from the katsuobushi flakes dried in the town.
  • Beyond the port the city has a coast of cliffs and small beaches, with views across to Kaimondake volcano. It is the end of the railway from Kagoshima, which gives the town a final-stop feeling.
  • Makurazaki is a good day trip for anyone who wants seafood and a working harbour rather than a resort beach.
