A practical English guide to Otaru in Hokkaido: the canal, the warehouses and access from Sapporo.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Otaru is a port city on the Sea of Japan, west of Sapporo, and it grew rich on herring and trade in the early twentieth century. The canal and the stone warehouses that line it are the image of the city, and they still hold shops, restaurants and museums.
  • Beyond the canal the town climbs into hills of temples, old banks and glass workshops, and the coast runs in small bays towards Yoichi. It is one of the most visited day trips from Sapporo, especially in snow.
  • Otaru is close enough to Sapporo for a half day, and quiet enough in the evening to stay overnight if you want the canal without the daytime crowds.
