A practical English guide to Satsumasendai in Kagoshima: the old shrine, the Sendai river and access from Kagoshima city.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Satsumasendai is a city on the west coast of Kagoshima, where the Sendai river reaches the East China Sea. It is known for Nitta shrine, one of the important shrines of the Satsuma domain, and for a landscape of river, coast and low hills.
  • The city also includes the Koshikijima islands offshore, which gives it a double character of mainland town and island municipality. On the mainland it is a quiet place of temples, farms and a practical centre, with fewer visitors than Kagoshima city or Ibusuki.
  • Satsumasendai is on the JR Kagoshima main line and the expressway, which makes it an easy stop west of Kagoshima, and a gateway to the islands.
