Why visit

  • Yurihonjo is a wide city in southern Akita, formed from several old towns between the Sea of Japan and the inland hills. It is farming and fishing country, with rice fields, a long coast and a practical centre of shops and stations.
  • The city is quiet and spread out, with beaches, small harbours and roads that run inland to the mountains. It is not a conventional tourist destination, but it is a good place to see the ordinary life of the Akita coast.
  • Yurihonjo is on the JR Uetsu main line between Akita and Sakata, which makes it a stop on the coastal route of western Tohoku.
