Why visit
- Furano is a city in the centre of Hokkaido, in a wide valley of farms and hills between Asahikawa and the Tokachi plain. It is known for its lavender fields in summer and for its ski slopes in winter, and it has become one of the most visited inland towns on the island.
- Beyond the flower farms, Furano is dairy and melon country, with long straight roads, barns and views of the Daisetsuzan range. The town centre is practical rather than picturesque, and the real attraction is the landscape around it.
- Furano is a seasonal destination. Summer brings the lavender and the melon harvest, winter brings the ski resorts, and spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper.
