A practical English guide to Gotsu in Shimane: the river mouth, the coastal centre and access from Hamada and Hiroshima.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Gotsu is a small city on the Japan Sea coast of Shimane, where the Gono river reaches the sea between Hamada and Oda. It is a quiet administrative and fishing town, with a station on the Sanin line and a centre of civic buildings and shops.
  • The landscape is the attraction: the river mouth, the coastal roads and the hills behind the town. It is not a resort, but it is a practical stop for anyone travelling the Sanin coast, with a slower pace than Hamada or Matsue.
  • Gotsu is on the JR Sanin main line, which makes it reachable from Hiroshima via Hamada, and a useful break on the long coastal route.
