A practical English guide to Hirono in Iwate: the Sanriku coast, the country roads and access from Morioka and Hachinohe.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Hirono is a small town on the Sanriku coast of northern Iwate, between Kuji and the Aomori border. It is fishing and farming country, with a rugged shoreline, small harbours and hills that fall to the Pacific.
  • The town is quiet and practical, with a town hall, schools and roads that connect the coast to the inland expressway. It is not a resort, but it is a good place to see the ordinary life of the Sanriku coast away from the better-known ports.
  • Hirono is on the JR Hachinohe line and the Sanriku railway corridor, and close to the expressway, which makes it a stop between Morioka, Kuji and Hachinohe.
