A practical English guide to Obihiro in Hokkaido: the Tokachi plain, the farm food and access from Sapporo and Kushiro.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Obihiro is the main city of the Tokachi plain in eastern Hokkaido, a wide landscape of farms, rivers and big skies. It is a practical city of stations, shops and food, and it sits at the centre of one of Japan’s richest agricultural regions.
  • The plain is the reason to come: dairy, wheat, beans and potatoes stretch to the mountains, and the city is known for its butadon pork rice bowls and its racetrack. The surrounding country has hot springs, parks and the roads towards Kushiro and Furano.
  • Obihiro is a base for Tokachi rather than a sightseeing town in itself, and it works well for travellers who want farm country without the crowds of the lavender belt.
