A practical English guide to Shiranuka in Hokkaido: the Pacific coast, the station town and access from Kushiro.

Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).

Why visit

  • Shiranuka is a small town on the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido, between Kushiro and the Tokachi plain. It is a fishing and dairy town, with a station on the Nemuro line and a long shoreline of low cliffs and beaches.
  • The town itself is quiet and practical, with a few shops around the station and roads that run inland to the farms. The coast is the reason to stop: cold water, driftwood and open views that feel far from the larger cities of the island.
  • Shiranuka is an easy train stop from Kushiro, and it is a good place to see the ordinary Pacific side of Hokkaido without the crowds of the national parks.
