Why visit
- Bizen is a city on the coast of Okayama, known for one of Japan’s oldest pottery traditions. Bizen ware is unglazed stoneware fired for days in wood kilns, and the town of Imbe is still full of workshops, galleries and climbing kilns.
- The pottery district is walkable, with shops that sell tea bowls, sake flasks and everyday ware, and museums that explain the firing. Beyond Imbe the city has a quiet coast and inland hills.
- Bizen is close to Okayama and Himeji, which makes it an easy half-day trip for anyone interested in crafts.
