A practical English guide to Tsuyama in Okayama: the castle ruins, the old temples and access from Okayama and Tottori.
Operational details such as opening hours, admission fees, and train times can change. Prefer official pages and reconfirm before you travel (sources checked on 08 November 2026).
Why visit
- Tsuyama is a castle town in the hills of northern Okayama, in a basin of the Yoshii river. It was the seat of a domain in the Edo period, and the castle ruins still sit on a hill above the centre, with stone walls and a park of cherry trees.
- Below the castle the town has temples, old streets and a quiet centre of shops and stations. It is far less visited than Okayama city or Kurashiki, which is the point of coming if you want a slower castle town.
- Tsuyama is on the JR Kishin line between Okayama and Tottori, which makes it a stop on the inland route across Chugoku.
